Woman killed when her car fell off the edge of Niagara Falls
The incident occurred in the town of Niagara Falls, in the northern part of the state.
The police intervened in the presence of a black vehicle that was practically submerged in the bed of the Niagara River, on the edge of the falls, which serves as a natural border between the United States and Canada, reported the AFP news agency.
The rescue operation included reducing the water flow, which was done with the help of a dam on the river, the local police (the New York State Park Police) explained in a statement.

Using drones and a helicopter, it was possible to locate “a body in the driver’s seat”, according to the same source.
As seen in images that were reproduced on television, a park ranger hung from a helicopter cable and tried to position himself on top of the vehicle, in the middle of a blizzard, just 50 meters from the cliff of the famous Niagara Falls.
“A woman in her 60s from western New York State was found at the scene,” police said in confirming her death.
The investigation must determine how the vehicle fell into the Niagara River between a car bridge and a pedestrian walkway.
