Woman chases leopard that had trapped her son for two kilometers and rescues him in India
The woman, locally known as Kiran Baiga, chased the animal screaming to retrieve her son, aged around five years in the Sanjay-Dubri National Park and Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, India, as told by the field director of the same, Y P Singh.
According to Singh, the family lives in Badi Jhiriya village, a buffer zone that is included within the reserve, but is not fenced.
The director told CNN that “the lady was sitting in her hut with her children when the leopard came. It took the child and started to run away when the lady chased it, screaming, and more people showed up, so the leopard let go of the child and ran away”.
Singh also stated to the media that the son “He was not badly injured, but the leopard’s teeth had sunk in. He was admitted to a hospital and is now completely fine.”
The park not only gathers tigers, but also other animals, including up to “32 species of mammals, including leopards” as CNN explains.
“These forests are monitored by forest officials, but it is not possible to track each and every movement of wild animals. Only collared animals can be tracked, otherwise the animals move freely,” explained the director.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan, chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, tweeted on the same day of the event that “this courage to face death is an amazing form of motherhood. Congratulations to the mother Mrs. Kiran Baiga on behalf of the people of the state.”
