Relatives of a woman charged in the death of her son during a fire earlier this year say they don’t understand why they are being punished.
Woman charged in son’s fire death to be arraigned in court May 11
Amari Campbell, 3, died in late February after a fire broke out in the West End apartment where his mother had left him in the care of his wheelchair-bound grandmother.
Firefighters said they believed the boy was lighting an incense and had started the fire on the sofa.
They found him hiding under a bed and removed him from the apartment.
On March 29, the jury indicted Angela Campbell, 24, the boy’s mother, on charges of involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment.
Prosecutors said Angela should have known her mother could not care for the child.
“There are no schools open. There’s no preschool. There’s no daycare available. Where is she supposed to take her child? She has to work and take care of her family,” said Angela’s sister Donna.
Donna says the whole thing is an injustice.
“And to think that if I go to work and leave my son with my mother, and something tragic happens, now I’m going to be punished. It doesn’t make sense,” Angela continues.
The prosecution says it has no official statement on the case at this time.
Angela’s pre-trial hearing is scheduled for May 11.
