Woman catches fire after crash during traffic stop attempt
A woman, who sheriff’s deputies say was hoarding fuel in her trunk, caught fire after a crash in Pickens County.
A sheriff’s deputy spotted a 2007 Pontiac G6 driving on Jameson Road in Pickens Thursday night. They say it was reported stolen.
As the vehicle approached the intersection of Jameson Road and Wolf Creek Road, the sheriff’s deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, according to the sheriff’s office. The driver of the Pontiac turned left onto Wolf Creek Road and attempted to flee.
As the sheriff’s deputy approached the vehicle, the driver, Jessica Dale Patterson, 28, exited the vehicle and was on fire. The deputy pushed Patterson to the ground to extinguish the flames, the sheriff said in a news release.
Deputies say the driver of the Pontiac lost control of the vehicle and overturned it.
Following what happened the vehicle caught fire and multiple explosions were heard inside the vehicle.
The 28-year-old woman was transported to the hospital. Her condition is unknown at this time.
Patterson told sheriff’s deputies that the woman was transporting several barrels of fuel that she had accumulated in the trunk of the vehicle.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol headed to the scene to investigate the case.
