Historic signing for the Winnipeg Jets
The Winnipeg Jets have made a groundbreaking move by signing forward Kevin He to a three-year entry-level contract, valued at an average annual salary of US$ 975,000. This signing not only marks a significant achievement for the franchise but also for the sport of hockey, as He becomes the first player born in China to secure a contract in the NHL.
This milestone is a testament to the growing diversity in professional sports and the increasing global reach of hockey.
Kevin He’s journey to the NHL
Born in Beijing, Kevin He moved to Montreal at the age of six, later settling in the Greater Toronto Area.
His journey to professional hockey began in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Niagara Ice Dogs, where he showcased his talent and determination. Selected 109th overall by the Jets in the fourth round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, He quickly made an impression during the Jets’ prospect camp and the Annual Young Stars Classic in Penticton.
His performance earned him an invitation to the main camp, where he contributed an assist in a preseason game against the Edmonton Oilers.
A promising future ahead
At just 18 years old, Kevin He has already made a name for himself in junior hockey.
As of October 22, he was named captain of the Ice Dogs, demonstrating leadership qualities that will serve him well in his professional career. With an impressive record of 23 goals and 20 assists in just 29 games, He is currently second in team scoring.
His signing with the Jets is not only a personal achievement but also a source of inspiration for young athletes, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.
He is the first of the Jets’ four 2024 draft picks to be signed, with the team also looking forward to the contributions of defenceman Alfons Friej and forwards Markus Lopenen and Kieron Walton.
As the NHL continues to evolve, the inclusion of players like Kevin He highlights the importance of diversity and representation in sports.
