Severe windstorm warnings issued
This Saturday, multiple ferry sailings across British Columbia have been cancelled in anticipation of a powerful windstorm. Environment Canada has issued wind warnings for several regions, including Metro Vancouver, Howe Sound, Greater Victoria, the Southern Gulf Islands, the Sunshine Coast, and both eastern and western Vancouver Island.
With winds expected to reach up to 70 km/h and gusts potentially hitting 90 km/h, safety measures are being taken to protect travelers and ferry operations.
BC Ferries takes precautionary measures
In response to the impending storm, BC Ferries has proactively cancelled morning sailings on major routes, including those between Horseshoe Bay, Departure Bay, Swartz Bay, Tsawwassen, Duke Point, and the Southern Gulf Islands.
Additionally, select sailings between Brentwood Bay, Mill Bay, Buckley Bay, Little River, Westview, and Denman Island are also at risk of cancellation. Travelers planning to use ferry services are strongly advised to check the BC Ferries website for real-time updates before heading to the terminal.
Coastal flooding risks and storm surges
Environment Canada has also warned of a potential storm surge on the South Coast, which could reach heights of up to one meter. Coastal areas of Metro Vancouver and the entire western side of Vancouver Island are particularly vulnerable to this surge.
The combination of elevated ocean water levels, significant winds, and large waves is expected to exceed the highest tide, raising concerns about coastal flooding. Areas such as Surrey, Langley, Richmond, and Delta are at risk, with flooding likely in low-lying regions and near the coastline, especially during high tides expected between 4 a.m.
and 7 a.m. and again from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
