From Ukraine to Nova Scotia: A new beginning

In 2023, the Pobyvanets family made a courageous decision to leave their war-torn homeland of Ukraine, seeking safety and a fresh start in Nova Scotia, Canada. With dreams of building a better life, they arrived with hope and determination.

However, just weeks after settling in, they faced an unimaginable challenge: the diagnosis of leukemia for their 13-year-old son, Pavlo. This sudden turn of events has not only tested their resilience but also highlighted the strength of community support in times of crisis.

The impact of a leukemia diagnosis

Pavlo’s diagnosis came as a shock to the family. “I had a lot of friends. We were hanging out, it was fun. But now, it kind of stopped,” he shared, reflecting on the abrupt change in his life.

The family had arrived in Canada under a special work permit program, but the demands of Pavlo’s treatment have made it impossible for both parents to maintain their jobs. Iryna, Pavlo’s mother, expressed the overwhelming nature of their situation, stating, “Before the diagnosis, I was working three jobs and my husband was working one job.

After we found out that diagnosis, our life has turned upside down.”

Community support: A lifeline in tough times

In the face of adversity, the Pobyvanets family has found solace in the kindness of their new community. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to assist with the financial burden of Pavlo’s treatment, raising over $20,000 since March.

Iryna expressed her gratitude, saying, “I can’t afford to give up. My son is my life. I’ll do everything I can for him and I’ll fight for him.” This outpouring of support not only provides financial relief but also reinforces the importance of community in healing and resilience.

Hope and determination

As Pavlo undergoes chemotherapy, the Pobyvanets family remains hopeful. Their journey is a testament to the power of love, determination, and community. While the road ahead may be challenging, the unwavering support from friends, neighbors, and even strangers serves as a reminder that they are not alone in this fight. The story of the Pobyvanets family is not just about battling leukemia; it’s about the strength found in unity and the hope that can flourish even in the darkest of times.
