Creating unforgettable memories
This holiday season, United Airlines is making dreams come true for children facing difficult circumstances through their heartwarming initiative known as “Fantasy Flights.” These special flights are designed to bring joy and excitement to kids who are battling serious illnesses or coping with the loss of loved ones.
Departing from 13 cities worldwide, these flights take children and their caregivers on a brief journey that culminates in a festive celebration reminiscent of the North Pole.
A magical journey
One of the most recent flights took place in Honolulu, where 125 pre-selected travelers, primarily families with children suffering from cancer or those grieving the loss of a family member, boarded a plane for a unique experience.
As the pilot announced over the intercom, the flight was not just about the journey but about the destination—”Christmas Island,” a magical place where Santa’s elves awaited their arrival. After a short flight that circled around Maui, the children were transported to a beautifully decorated hangar that resembled Santa’s workshop, thanks to the efforts of over 150 United staff and volunteers.
More than just a flight
Upon landing, the children were greeted with gifts from their Christmas wish lists, participated in fun activities, and enjoyed a festive meal with their families. For many of these children, this experience is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Alex Wereszczynskyj, the development director at HUGS Hawaii, emphasized the importance of such events for families who are often financially strained due to medical expenses. “This kind of fills in that gap, and who doesn’t want to go to the North Pole and see Santa?” he remarked.
Community support and volunteer efforts
The success of the Fantasy Flights is a testament to the power of community support and volunteerism. Lena Wong, a United customer service agent, highlighted the dedication of volunteers who contribute their time and resources to make these flights possible.
Many of the children participating in these flights have never been on a plane before, making the experience even more magical. Families like that of Tony Mailo, whose son Amadeus is battling cancer, expressed their gratitude for the event, describing it as “amazing” and “magical.” The meticulous decorations and thoughtful planning behind the event left a lasting impression on all involved.
Spreading holiday cheer worldwide
This month, United Airlines is set to launch Fantasy Flights from various cities, including Chicago, Denver, and London, ensuring that children across the globe can experience the joy of the holiday season. As these flights take off, they not only provide a moment of joy but also create lasting memories for families facing challenging times. The initiative exemplifies the spirit of giving and the importance of community support during the holiday season.
