On that fateful day, McIntyre-Starko and a friend consumed drugs found in a cooler box, which had been discovered on a street corner. Shortly after, both fell unconscious in their dorm room. Despite the immediate danger, the 911 call takers failed to recognize the signs of an overdose, delaying crucial interventions like CPR and the administration of naloxone, a life-saving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses.
This oversight has sparked outrage and calls for reform in emergency response protocols, particularly in university settings where young adults are at risk.
Lessons learned from the inquest
The coroner’s inquest, which is expected to last three weeks, aims to uncover the facts surrounding McIntyre-Starko’s death and recommend measures to prevent similar tragedies.
An external review by former Abbotsford police chief Bob Rich revealed significant errors in the response to the overdose, prompting changes to 911 procedures and improved access to naloxone on campuses. Dr. Caroline McIntyre, Sidney’s mother, has emphasized the need for ongoing improvements to ensure that no other family has to endure such a loss.
