“Specifically, the U.S. strikes targeted operational and weapons storage facilities at two locations in Syria and one location in Iraq, both of which are near the border between those countries,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

The U.S. military reportedly used F-15s and F-16s during the airstrike and at least one facility was believed to have been destroyed.

The strikes come a week after Iran elected a hardliner, Ebrahim Raisi, as its next president and also come at the same time that the Biden administration is urging Iran to re-enter the highly controversial Iran Nuclear Deal.

Terrorism expert Max Abrahams highlighted a portion of the Defense Department’s statement on the attacks that said the U.S.

was only in Iraq for ISIS.

“We are in Iraq at the invitation of the Government of Iraq for the sole purpose of assisting the Iraqi Security Forces in their efforts to defeat ISIS,” the statement said.

Abrahams raised the question of whether the statement was conveying that the U.S.

was not in Iraq to “contain Iran.”

“As a matter of international law, the United States acted in accordance with its right to self-defense,” the statement added.
