Two-year-old girl dies after building collapse in Brazil
A two-year-old girl died today in Rio de Janeiro after a building collapsed for reasons still unclear to Brazilian authorities.
Her father also died, according to reports, while among the injured is the mother of the deceased girl, who resisted for about six hours inside the rubble before being rescued.
The deputy mayor of Rio did not rule out that the reason for the incident was irregular construction, as is often the case with buildings constructed in that area.
In addition, several other people were rescued from the rubble and are already being treated at the nearest hospital.
“Unfortunately, the constructions here do not have legality and this type of accident ends up happening,” said Galhardo, deputy mayor of Rio de Janeiro.
The building that collapsed today was located in the same region of the Muzema community, also in the Rio das Pedras region, where the collapse of two irregularly constructed buildings left 24 dead in April 2019.
The girl’s father also died while her mother remains injured, the woman resisted for about six hours inside the rubble before rescuers arrived at the site.
“Unfortunately, the constructions here do not have legality and these types of accidents end up happening,” said the deputy mayor.
