Instead of allowing this nutrient-rich byproduct to end up in landfills or underutilized at composting facilities, aGRO Systems repurposes it as a valuable feed additive for local ranchers. This innovative solution not only benefits the environment but also supports the local agricultural economy.

The Science Behind Spent Grain

Spent grain, the leftover material from the brewing process, is often discarded despite its potential. Victoria Ross explains, “Spent grain itself in its wet form is only like five to six percent crude protein. But if you dry it down to its whole form, then it would be about 25 percent crude protein.” This transformation makes it an excellent feed option for livestock, particularly cattle, which typically finish on a diet of 12 to 13 percent protein.

By drying and repurposing spent grain, aGRO Systems is not only reducing waste but also enhancing the nutritional value of livestock feed.

A Win-Win Partnership

Collaboration is at the core of aGRO Systems’ philosophy. The company partners with 33 breweries in Calgary, including 88 Brewing, to create a mutually beneficial relationship.

Brendan Barnett from 88 Brewing highlights the synergy of their partnership: “It’s been amazing for us. It’s kind of rare that you get 100 percent win-win.” This collaboration has led to significant environmental benefits, with aGRO Systems ensuring that over seven million pounds of spent grain were diverted from landfills in 2024 alone.

Since its inception, the company has successfully redirected more than 50 million pounds of waste.

Future Aspirations and Community Impact

Looking ahead, Victoria Ross envisions expanding the impact of aGRO Systems beyond just waste reduction. She aims to create the “Little Farm Store,” a platform that will allow farmers and ranchers within their network to sell their products directly to consumers in Alberta.

This initiative not only supports local agriculture but also fosters a sense of community and sustainability. Ross is also eager to extend their services to breweries and ranchers in Edmonton, further amplifying the positive effects of their work.
