Tropical Storm Sara causing severe weather in Central America

Tropical Storm Sara unleashes heavy rains and winds in Central America.

Tropical Storm Sara made landfall in Belize on Sunday, unleashing a torrent of rain that threatens to cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides across the region. As the storm moved inland, it left behind a trail of destruction, particularly affecting the northern coast of Honduras, where it had stalled since Friday, causing rivers to swell and trapping residents in their homes.

Weather warnings and forecasts

The U.S. National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm warning that extends along the Caribbean coast of Guatemala, the coast of Belize, and northward into Mexico’s Quintana Roo state, covering areas from Chetumal to Puerto Costa Maya. These regions are bracing for significant rainfall, with forecasts predicting up to 5 inches (13 cm) in some areas, while localized totals could reach as high as 15 inches (38 cm).

Flooding and mudslide risks

According to the Hurricane Center, the conditions created by Tropical Storm Sara are likely to result in flash flooding, which could be severe in certain areas. The potential for mudslides is also a significant concern, particularly in regions that have already been saturated by previous rainfall. The storm surge is expected to elevate water levels by 1 to 3 feet above ground level, especially near the coast of Belize, where large and destructive waves are anticipated.

Continued threats in Honduras

While Belize prepares for the storm’s impact, northern Honduras is not yet out of danger. The Hurricane Center predicts that Sara could drop up to 3 inches (8 cm) of rain in this area, with some locations possibly experiencing total rainfall of up to 40 inches (1 meter). This could lead to catastrophic and life-threatening flooding, emphasizing the need for residents to remain vigilant and prepared for emergency situations.

As Tropical Storm Sara continues its path through Central America, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of residents in affected areas. Authorities are urging individuals to stay informed about weather updates and to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property from the impending severe weather.
