The car burst into flames after crashing into a block of apartments near Westbourne Park tube station in Notting Hill, west London, just before dawn on Tuesday.

Shocked residents in the area watched in horror as people tried in vain to rescue a screaming man trapped in the wreckage of the burning vehicle before it exploded.

A police officer on the scene said the driver had crossed a canal bridge before losing control of the vehicle. Firefighters extinguished the flames, but three people were pronounced dead at the scene.

A resident who lives across the street from the scene of the terrible accident said, “I heard a loud bang and knew it was a car accident, but not how bad it was. I went out to see what had happened and two boys were trying to get their friend out of the car, but it was engulfed in flames.”

“They had the door open and the man was yelling ‘get me out of here!’ ‘ But they couldn’t get him out and fled. The next minute, the car exploded in a fireball, there’s really nothing anyone could have done.”

Brian Waldy, 70, a retired surveyor who lives in a basement in the building next door, said, “There was a man a couple of yards away shouting in the car something about the seatbelt buckle. But then another person yelled ‘get out of the way, bro, it’s going to explode,’ so the guy backed up and moved out of the way.”

Several residents were evacuated from the building where the car hit as a precaution and the crime scene remains in place as the investigation continues.
