Turning waste into valuable resources

In recent years, the conversation around sustainability has intensified, especially in the agricultural sector. One Alberta-based company, aGRO Systems, is at the forefront of this movement, working diligently with local craft breweries to repurpose spent grain that would otherwise contribute to landfill waste.

Founded by Victoria Ross in 2018, aGRO Systems has created a unique solution that not only benefits the environment but also supports local ranchers by providing them with a high-protein feed additive for livestock.

Spent grain, in its wet form, contains only about five to six percent crude protein.

However, when dried, it can reach up to 25 percent crude protein, significantly enhancing its value as livestock feed. This innovative approach not only reduces waste but also helps ranchers cut costs associated with traditional feed sources. Ross’s motivation stems from a personal connection to the farming community, inspired by her father’s struggles to maintain their ranch while juggling multiple jobs.

Building partnerships for a sustainable future

Collaboration is key to aGRO Systems’ success. The company partners with 33 breweries in Calgary, including 88 Brewing, to ensure that spent grain is utilized effectively. Brendan Barnett from 88 Brewing emphasizes the mutual benefits of this partnership, stating, “It’s been amazing for us.

It’s kind of rare that you get 100-percent win-win.” This synergy not only helps breweries reduce their carbon footprint but also supports ranchers in accessing quality feed.

In 2024 alone, aGRO Systems successfully diverted over seven million pounds of spent grain from landfills, with 660,000 pounds coming from 88 Brewing.

Since its inception, the company has prevented more than 50 million pounds of waste from going to waste, showcasing the significant impact of their efforts. This model of sustainability is not just beneficial for the environment; it also fosters a sense of community among local producers.

Looking ahead: Expanding the impact

As aGRO Systems continues to grow, Ross envisions expanding their services to even more farmers and ranchers across Alberta. One of her ambitious plans includes launching the “Little Farm Store,” a platform that will allow local producers within their network to sell their products directly to consumers. This initiative aims to reduce costs and increase accessibility for both farmers and consumers, creating a more sustainable local economy.

Moreover, Ross is eager to extend aGRO Systems’ reach beyond Calgary, with plans to offer their services to breweries and ranchers in Edmonton this summer. By fostering these connections, aGRO Systems is not only transforming waste into valuable resources but also paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient agricultural landscape in Alberta.
