In a harrowing incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, an Uber driver was fatally shot in a targeted attack outside a hookah lounge in Philadelphia. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, has raised serious concerns about safety in urban areas, particularly as crime rates continue to escalate.
Details of the incident
The victim, identified as 77-year-old Olatunji W. Bolaji, was picking up a 22-year-old passenger outside the Byblos Hookah Bar when the attack took place. Surveillance footage obtained by NBC10 shows Bolaji’s passenger embracing a woman just moments before two armed men emerged from a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
As the suspects approached, the woman fled, sensing the imminent danger.
In a desperate attempt to escape, the passenger jumped into Bolaji’s black Chevy Suburban. However, the assailants surrounded the vehicle, and one suspect pointed a gun inside, firing multiple shots.
Tragically, Bolaji was struck in the head, while the passenger sustained injuries to his arm, leg, and abdomen.
Despite his grave injury, Bolaji managed to drive away but crashed into a light pole just a block away. He was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind a grieving family and community.
Community response and ongoing investigations
The Philadelphia Police Department has launched an investigation into the shooting, offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects, who remain unidentified. Chief Inspector Scott Small confirmed that there was a physical altercation between the suspects and the passenger prior to Bolaji’s arrival, indicating a premeditated attack.
Neighbors described Bolaji as a hardworking and friendly individual, deeply respected in his community. His family expressed their devastation over his murder, highlighting the impact of this tragedy on their lives. Uber released a statement expressing condolences and offering support to law enforcement in their pursuit of justice.
