A somber gathering as the Vancouver community copes with tragedy.

What happened at the festival?

On a night that was supposed to be filled with joy and celebration, the Lapu Lapu Day event in Vancouver turned into a scene of horror. Just after 8 p.m., an SUV drove into a crowd, resulting in the tragic deaths of 11 individuals and injuring many others.

Witnesses described the chaos that ensued, with one attendee, Bjorn Villaruel, recalling the moment he heard a loud bang and saw people being thrown into the air. “I thought it was a car accident at first,” he said, visibly shaken.

“But then I saw the SUV accelerate again towards the crowd.”

The community’s response

The aftermath of the incident left the community in shock. Local food truck owners, Aadiah Muhamad and her husband Mohamed Sairmen, were among those who witnessed the tragedy unfold.

They initially thought the loud bangs were from a propane tank explosion, only to discover the grim reality outside their truck. “We saw people injured, one guy was holding his leg,” Sairmen recounted. The couple, who had been enjoying a successful day at the festival, were now faced with the heartbreaking task of helping the injured.

Reactions from festival-goers

Global BC anchor Jason Pires, who emceed the event, expressed his disbelief at the stark contrast between the festival’s joyful atmosphere and the tragedy that followed. “It was a family-friendly event, and to see such a compassionate community now reeling from this incident is heartbreaking,” he stated.

The festival, which had been a celebration of culture and community, now left many questioning how such a horrific event could occur in a place filled with love and unity.

The investigation and charges

As the investigation unfolds, Kai-Ji Adam Lo, the driver of the SUV, has been charged with eight counts of second-degree murder.

He remains in custody as authorities continue to piece together the motive behind this senseless act. The community is left grappling with the aftermath, seeking answers and healing in the wake of such a devastating event.

Moving forward

In the days following the tragedy, the community has come together to support one another. Vigils and memorials are being organized to honor the victims and provide a space for healing. As they navigate this difficult time, the resilience of the community shines through, reminding everyone that love and support can prevail even in the darkest moments.
