The world’s most premature baby celebrated his first birthday after beating 0% chance of survival
A baby born weighing less than half a kilo beat the odds and celebrated his first birthday, becoming the most premature baby ever to survive
When Richard Scott William Hutchinson was born prematurely at five months, his doctors prepared his parents for the worst.
Richard was born at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after his mother, Beth Hutchinson, suffered medical complications that sent her to work.
Born 131 days early and weighing only 337 grams, Richard was so small that his parents could hold him in the palm of their hand, Guinness said.
When (his parents) Rick and Beth received prenatal counseling on what to expect with a baby born so early, our neonatology team gave them a 0% chance of survival,” said Dr. Stacy Kern, Richard’s neonatologist at Children’s Minnesota.
“I knew Richards’ first few weeks of life were going to be very difficult, but I believed that if he made it through them, he would be a survivor.”
On June 5, the lucky baby was able to celebrate his first birthday surrounded by his family and his three dogs.
“I couldn’t believe that this was the same child who was once so sick that I feared he wouldn’t survive. The same little boy who once fit in the palm of my hand, with skin so translucent I could see every rib and vessel in his little body. I couldn’t help but squeeze him and tell him how proud I was of him,” added Dr. Stacy Kern.
“The day Richard was discharged from the intensive care unit was a very special day. I remember lifting him out of the crib and holding him with tears,” said Kern.
