The woman, from Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales, spent nine weeks in hospital fighting for her life while in a coma, but lost four of her fingers on her right hand, her left arm and both legs.

The woman had raised more than £20,000, of her £265,000 target, but said she had “no quality of life, but was enduring it.”

An investigation turned up that her husband Robert, 56, received a call from Jayne asking him to pick up their dog; unfortunately, when he arrived at the woman’s home, she had hanged herself.

Jayne Carpenter’s medical case

In 2016, the woman developed sepsis after attending the doctor with a simple cough; at the hospital, she was diagnosed with pneumonia and later slipped into a coma; months later Jayne awoke, but had already lost her limbs.

However, in November 2019, her husband noticed “a sudden decline” in Jayne’s mental health and she began to drink a lot of alcohol, even, he reported that she overdosed on two occasions.

South Wales Central assistant coroner Dr. Sarah Jane Richards said that “without a doubt, the loss of her limbs caused a life-changing loss for this previously healthy and active woman.”

She added that her death was “in the context of traumatic life-changing events that challenged her will to live.”
