The Komondor is a breed of guard and herding dog, originally from Hungary
The Komondor is a dog of large size and robust build. With a minimum height of 65 cm (females) to 90 cm (males), and a weight of 40 to 80 kg, it is one of the largest breeds in existence. In addition to its large size, its most outstanding characteristic is its coat, which is always white, long, thick and hangs in long locks reminiscent of dreadlocks or the bristles of some types of mops.
The coat of an adult dog is composed of a fine undercoat and an outer coat of coarse hair that combine to form the aforementioned tufts. This appearance is obtained naturally, although some assistance is required to avoid tangles. The length of the cords increases as the dog grows. Traditionally, this strange coat protects the dog from attacks by wolves, which were unable to bite through this dense tangle.
Like most herding dogs, the Komondor is a calm and quiet dog as long as the situation is normal. In case of danger he will bravely defend the herds in his care, this instinct is also reflected with his family and territory, which he tends to protect.
He was bred to think independently and make his own decisions. It is an affectionate dog with the family and gentle with children; although distrustful of strangers, it will accept them when it confirms that they have no bad intentions.
It is a very athletic breed, capable of jumping and attacking any predator in order to drive it away, and has been successfully used to defend herds against bears and wolves.
It can suffer from some problems caused by its long coat, which presents hygiene considerations. The Komondor is a herding breed and is very effective and efficient at doing its job.
