Texas mother accidentally shoots her own 5-year-old son
A Texas mother accidentally shot and wounded her 5-year-old son, who was riding a bicycle.
While attempting to shoot a puppy.
The woman, Angelia Mia Vargas, 24, was charged with fatal behavior with a firearm after firing three shots at the 6-month-old boxer puppy and subsequently wounding her son in the abdomen.
“I came out of my house because Bruno [the dog] was barking and barking,” the dog’s owner said.
“I thought my brother was coming, so I opened the door a little bit and he ran out.”
Vargas, her son and the boy’s father had been riding bikes in the Houston neighborhood.
Security video shows the puppy running outside with its owner immediately following and trying to call the dog back into the house.
The animal walks down the street and several gunshots ring out, followed by the prolonged screams of the boy’s parents.
“She could have handled it differently,” said the dog’s owner.
“She was there, her partner was there, even I was there, nothing could happen, nothing bad.”
The puppy was grazed by a bullet in the leg and its owner was charged with a misdemeanor for having a dog at large.
While Vargas‘ son was later hospitalized in stable condition with thankfully non-life-threatening injuries.
Texas lawmakers recently passed a bill to allow open carry of firearms without a permit or training.
This is the dog owner speaking:
