Teen who videotaped George Floyd ‘s murder still carries the weight of that moment
Darnella Frazier, 18, just shared a lot about what her life was like up until the moment she witnessed Floyd’s life being taken from him and says his murder has changed her forever.
Darnella was 17 when she pulled out her phone to record the terrifying arrest.
She says the murder completely changed her outlook on life, stating that “it made me realize how dangerous it is to be black in America.”
Darnella claims that part of her childhood was taken away as she saw Floyd’s death face-to-face, as well as her 9-year-old cousin, who was with her as she thought it would be a normal walk to the corner store.
After her video went viral, Darnella says she had to move out of her home because it was no longer safe, and that she couldn’t sleep for weeks and would often wake up until her mother shook her.
She also says she still suffers panic and anxiety attacks when she sees police cars.
While some people hail Darnella as a hero for recording the video that played a role in Chauvin’s conviction, she doesn’t believe she is a hero, and says she was just in the right moment.
She says she is still trying to recover, but is proud of her resilience in the face of such a traumatic, life-changing experience.
Darnella ended her reflections with a message to George “I can’t express enough, as I wish things were different, but I want you to know that you will always be in my heart and this day will never be forgotten by you, may your soul rest in peace.”
