On a vibrant Sunday afternoon, hundreds of Syrian Canadians gathered outside Calgary’s city hall, their voices rising in unison as they cheered, danced, and sang in celebration of a momentous occasion: the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria.
After nearly 14 years of civil war and over five decades of authoritarian rule, the news of Bashar al-Assad’s government crumbling has ignited a wave of hope and joy among the Syrian diaspora.
Emotions run high as freedom feels tangible
For many, like Sam Nammoura, the reality of freedom is still sinking in. “I never felt free till yesterday,” he exclaimed, reflecting the sentiments of countless others who have lived under the shadow of oppression. The fear of speaking out, of repercussions for loved ones back home, has been a constant weight on their shoulders.
Now, with the regime’s fall, there is a palpable sense of relief and optimism. Fatima Alokda, another member of the community, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Today is a big big day for Syrians. The dictator has officially gone down, after fourteen years.” This newfound freedom is not just a personal victory; it symbolizes hope for a brighter future for Syria.
Plans for the future: Reconnecting with loved ones
Despite the joy of the moment, many Syrian Canadians are acutely aware that the journey to a safe and stable Syria is far from over. Alokda shared her hopes of visiting family and friends once it is safe to do so, saying, “We can’t right now because there’s still … there’s still some stuff that needs to be fixed.
But we are definitely planning to go back to visit, to see our family.” This longing to reconnect with their roots is a common thread among the community, highlighting the deep ties that remain despite the distance.
Gratitude for Canada’s support
Throughout their struggles, the Syrian community in Canada has found solace in the kindness and support of their new home. Alokda expressed heartfelt gratitude, stating, “We will never forget what Canada has done for us. Canada means a lot to us.” This appreciation is not just for the safety and opportunities they have found but also for the sense of belonging that Canada has provided during such tumultuous times. As they celebrate this historic moment, the Syrian Canadians in Calgary are not only looking back at their past but also forward to a future filled with hope and possibility.
