Unexpected adventure turns into survival challenge
What began as a simple drive on Vancouver Island quickly escalated into a week-long struggle for survival for Ken and Linda Biggs. The couple set out from Port McNeill, hoping to enjoy a scenic three-hour journey through the back roads.
However, their plans took a drastic turn when their truck broke down at Bonanza Lake, leaving them stranded in the wilderness.
Facing the elements with limited resources
With only a few apples, oranges, and dog treats to sustain them, the Biggs found themselves in a precarious situation.
They stumbled upon a nearby cabin, which offered some shelter from the harsh elements. “I see there is some wood, there is a fireplace,” Linda recalled. The cabin, which contained a set of bunk beds and a small kitchen sink, also held a surprising stash of preserves.
Despite their luck in finding shelter, the couple faced the daunting challenge of surviving without cell service or any means of communication.
Community support brings hope
As days turned into nights, the couple struggled with the cold, often retreating to their truck for warmth.
Linda described the frigid nights, saying, “I’d wake up so cold, that everything chattered.” Their spirits waned as they rationed their meager food supply, and Linda admitted to moments of despair, fearing they might never be found. Meanwhile, their daughter, noticing the food left behind at their home, rallied the community for help.
Social media played a crucial role in spreading the word, prompting concerned locals to join the search.
A heartwarming reunion
After days of uncertainty, hope finally arrived when Linda heard horns outside the cabin. “There’s my big son,” she exclaimed, overwhelmed with emotion.
The reunion was a powerful reminder of the strength of community and family bonds. The Biggs emerged from their ordeal relatively unscathed, grateful for the support they received and the resilience they discovered within themselves. They plan to replenish the food they consumed during their unexpected stay, a small gesture to honor the cabin that kept them safe.
