Why street sweeping matters

As the snow melts and spring arrives in Calgary, the city gears up for an essential task: street sweeping. This annual initiative is not just about aesthetics; it plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of all road users, from pedestrians to cyclists and motorists.

With approximately 50,000 tonnes of gravel, sand, and debris accumulated over the winter months, the city’s 30 street sweepers are set to tackle about 17,000 kilometers of roads. The program, which costs around $7 million, is scheduled to run from April 14th to June 20th, depending on weather conditions.

Environmental impact of street sweeping

Chris Hewitt, manager of Mobility Maintenance, emphasizes that the street sweeping program has two primary objectives: enhancing safety and protecting the environment. By removing sediment and gravel, the city prevents these materials from entering waterways, which can lead to pollution and harm aquatic life.

Additionally, street sweeping helps reduce visual pollution and airborne dust, contributing to cleaner air quality in Calgary. This proactive approach not only benefits the environment but also promotes a healthier urban landscape.

What residents need to know

For residents, the street sweeping schedule is crucial.

The city will notify neighborhoods at least 12 hours in advance, often providing two to three days’ notice. This allows residents to move their vehicles off the streets, avoiding fines and ensuring the sweepers can do their job effectively. Enforcement officers will patrol communities to check for vehicles that remain parked on the street, with fines starting at $120, reduced to $80 for prompt payment.

In denser areas, vehicles may even be towed to facilitate the sweeping process.

Stay informed and prepared

Calgary residents can stay updated on the street sweeping schedule by signing up for notifications via email or text at calgary.ca/sweep.

This service ensures that everyone is aware of when their neighborhood will be swept, allowing for better preparation and compliance. Additionally, if garbage or recycling collection coincides with street sweeping, residents are advised to move their bins to avoid any disruption. By participating in this initiative, residents contribute to a cleaner, safer Calgary.
