Spring break travel surge in Kelowna

As spring break unfolds, Kelowna International Airport (YLW) is experiencing a significant influx of travelers, with daily passenger numbers reaching between 6,500 and 7,500, according to CEO Sam Samaddar. This marks a notable increase, with a growth rate of approximately 10.5% in the first two months of 2025 compared to the previous year.

The airport is gearing up for a bustling March, anticipating even higher numbers as families and young adults embark on their spring break adventures.

Changing travel plans amid geopolitical tensions

This year, many travelers are rethinking their itineraries. Ongoing tensions between the U.S.

and Canada have prompted some Canadians to opt for local destinations or steer clear of the United States entirely, showcasing a sense of national solidarity. Samaddar notes, “Our Canadian carriers’ point of sale into the U.S. has seen a significant drop in demand, with travelers shifting their plans from the U.S.

to destinations like Mexico.” Despite these changes, travel from the U.S. to Canada remains robust, with American airlines such as Alaska Airlines reporting strong passenger numbers into Kelowna.

Okanagan Valley: A hotspot for U.S. visitors

The Okanagan Valley is becoming increasingly popular among U.S.

travelers, particularly on the ski slopes. Michael J. Ballingall from Big White Ski Resort highlights, “The USA has really found the Okanagan.” Resorts like Revelstoke, SilverStar, Big White, and Sun Peaks are witnessing a surge in visitors, partly due to new flight routes from Alaska.

Big White, for instance, is enjoying an impressive occupancy rate of 95% to 100% during this peak spring break period, indicating a thriving tourism sector.

Future prospects for Kelowna International Airport

As both domestic and international travel to the region continues to rise, YLW is strategically positioning itself to capitalize on this growing demand.

Samaddar emphasizes the importance of fostering even more travel opportunities in the upcoming summer months. “Domestic travel remains strong, and we are actively collaborating with our air carriers to explore ways to enhance demand further,” he states. This proactive approach aims to ensure that Kelowna remains a top choice for travelers seeking adventure and relaxation in the beautiful Okanagan Valley.
