The world is full of unusual cases and personalities, for example Jacobo Grinberg, the Mexican scientist who disappeared without a trace in 1994, or Selene Delgado, who was a recurrent on Channel 5’s Community Service capsules, although many people claim she never existed. To this list of strange situations we can add María Ángeles Durán, a Spanish woman who claims to be the owner of the Sun, and even sued eBay for blocking her sale of parcels of the sun.

The woman, who is also a writer, came up with the idea while surfing the Internet: she came across the story of Dennis Hope, an American who in 1980 found a legal loophole that allowed him to claim the Moon.

Originally from the city of Vigo, Durán, who works as a judicial expert, obtained in 2010 a notarial deed declaring her the owner of the Sun.

“Owner of the Sun, a star of spectral type G2, which is within the solar system, located at an average distance from Earth of approximately 149 million 600 thousand kilometers,” the document states.

The woman, who is also a writer, came up with the idea while working on one of her books, A Tale of Three You, Me, and Alzheimer’s: while surfing the Internet, she came across the story of Dennis Hope, an American who in 1980 found a loophole that allowed him to claim the Moon.

He points out that in 2008 Angeles was involved in a dispute with the General Society of Authors and Publishers after he registered the Tarzan’s cry in his name.

Her lawsuit against eBay was unsuccessful, as she could do little against the company’s argument: that the Sun is not a tangible good.

But after becoming known for this lawsuit, many people threatened to take legal action against him for the damage that the sun causes to the skin.
