Wilcher’s breakout performance

In a thrilling season opener, Simeon Wilcher showcased his potential, scoring a career-high 17 points in St. John’s decisive 92-60 victory over Fordham. The former top-40 recruit from Roselle Catholic demonstrated a newfound confidence and composure that was absent during his freshman year.

Wilcher’s shooting was particularly impressive, as he made 7 of 9 attempts from the field, including several key jump shots that helped establish St. John’s dominance early in the game.

Reflecting on his performance, Wilcher noted, “Everything just feels like I’m just playing, going with the game, and not really thinking too much.” This shift in mindset has been crucial for him, as he struggled with overthinking during his freshman season.

Coach Rick Pitino has consistently praised Wilcher’s talent, and his performance against Fordham certainly validated those claims.

Coach Pitino’s influence

Coach Rick Pitino’s guidance has played a significant role in Wilcher’s development. Since the summer, Pitino has emphasized the importance of confidence and quick decision-making on the court.

Wilcher’s ability to make swift plays and finish strong drives to the basket was evident throughout the game. His transformation from a hesitant freshman to a decisive sophomore is a testament to the hard work he has put in during the offseason.

Wilcher acknowledged the hours spent in the gym, stating, “A lot of hours [in the gym] and just having that confidence in myself.” This dedication has allowed him to overcome the mental hurdles that plagued him last season. Pitino’s coaching philosophy encourages players to focus on the next opportunity rather than dwell on mistakes, a lesson Wilcher has embraced wholeheartedly.

Challenges for RJ Luis

While Wilcher shined, it was a challenging night for junior forward RJ Luis. Limited to just 13 minutes due to foul trouble, Luis’s performance was marred by frustration. He faced two offensive fouls and received a technical foul for an unsportsmanlike act after fouling out.

Coach Pitino expressed disbelief at Luis’s actions, stating, “That is so not RJ. Not indicative of him as a person.” This incident highlights the importance of maintaining composure on the court, especially in high-pressure situations.

Despite the setback, Pitino remains optimistic about Luis’s potential. He emphasized the need for players to learn from their mistakes and move forward. As the season progresses, both Wilcher and Luis will play crucial roles in St. John’s quest for success, and their ability to adapt and grow will be key to the team’s performance.
