When security attendants at Corcoran State Prison made their usual rounds on this morning of March 9, 2019, they found one of the inmates lifeless.

Luis Romero, 44, was decapitated by his cellmate, Jaime Osuna, 31.

According to the autopsy, one day in the early morning, Osuna used a sharp object to devalue the face of his sacrificed, he began with cutting his eye, then he would separate one of his fingers and remove part of his ribs and liver.

Finally, Osuna, who calls himself a Satanist, hung some parts of his victim’s body around his neck as if they were a necklace.

“We believe the victim was conscious for at least part of the time,” said Kings County District Attorney Phil Esbenshade.

However, according to the complaint, the guards failed to conduct any routine examination and did not notice a sheet blocking the view of the cell where Osuna was caring for Romero, who had been transferred from another Corcoran prison two days before him.

That happened two years ago, but details of the crime are back in the news because the victim’s family has filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Osuna was serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole, for the 2011 murder of 37-year-old Yvette Peña, whom he also tortured after the act.

Romero, who already had 27 years in prison for a conviction of murdering a woman when he was a teenager, was about to be released.
