Scientist Compares Newly Discovered Dinosaur to Star Wars Porg
During the discussion of prehistoric flying reptiles, you may think of terrible winged creatures that you wouldn’t see in Jurassic Park.
New York contributions reports how an international team of scientists revealed the fossilized skeleton of the creature in China’s Hubei province.
The researchers discovered that it was a new species of pterosaurs, a species of flying reptile, which lived during the most Mesozoic era, around 252 to 66 million years ago.
While many people consider pterosaurs to be flying dinosaurs, the cool cousins of the reptilian family tree were at the same time and are extinct.
An essential cry from the long-tailed pterosaurs we are used to, the newly discovered species, called Sinomacrops Bondei, looks much more adorable.
As you can see after the photos, they were small fuzzy pterosaurs with flat faces, bug eyes and broad wings – they looked like a cross between a bat and a slow loris.
Their unusually sweet appearance has prompted a whole host of comparisons, from Porgs to Gremlin to our personal Gizmodo favorite: Megan Jabobs, a paleontologist at Baylor University (Texas) who was not involved in the research, told the publication that the discovery is exciting.
Speaking of the Porg-like creatures, she said, “It’s very round with big eyes that look forward.”
“The finding of these early pterosaurs gives us insight into how they began to adapt and alter aspects of their lives.
