Extreme cold takes a toll on businesses

This winter, Saskatchewan has faced some of the coldest temperatures on record, leaving many local businesses struggling to cope. Ski resorts, which typically thrive during the winter months, have been particularly hard hit.

For instance, Optimist Hill, a popular destination for families and school groups, has had to close its slopes or reduce operating hours due to the severe weather conditions. General manager Maxine Tebbe expressed the challenges faced, stating, “It’s definitely been a lot of rough days in the month of February.” The extreme cold has forced the resort to reschedule numerous school groups, impacting their busiest season.

Impact on local ski resorts

Other ski resorts in Saskatchewan are experiencing similar difficulties. Mission Ridge’s business manager, Anders Svenson, noted that they have had to close multiple times due to the harsh weather. This unfortunate timing coincides with the February school break, a period when families plan their winter holidays.

Eileen Shaw, general manager of Wapiti Valley Ski Resort, echoed these sentiments, mentioning that schools had to cancel activities during the cold snap, resulting in closures during a critical time for business. The ripple effect of these closures extends beyond just the resorts, affecting local economies and the livelihoods of those who depend on winter tourism.

Looking ahead: A glimmer of hope

Despite the challenges, there is a sense of optimism as warmer temperatures are forecasted for the upcoming weekend and the following week. Ski resort managers are hopeful that this change will lead to a resurgence in visitors.

Svenson remarked, “Hopefully the long-term forecast stays accurate, and if it is, it should be a good end to the year.” As temperatures rise, the hope is that families will flock back to the slopes, making up for lost time and revenue.

The resilience of these businesses and their commitment to providing winter fun for all ages remains strong, even in the face of adversity.
