In a thrilling display of talent and teamwork, the inaugural SJHL-MJHL Western All-Star Showcase concluded with a spectacular performance by Weyburn Red Wings goaltender Angelo Zol. Stopping all 32 shots he faced, Zol’s efforts were pivotal in Team SJHL’s 2-0 victory over Team MJHL at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex.
“The boys played fantastic in front of me,” Zol remarked, highlighting the collaborative spirit that defined the event.
A fresh approach to showcasing talent
This year’s showcase marked a significant shift from the traditional Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Showcase, which previously brought together all franchises.
Instead, the event focused on the best U19 junior A players from both the SJHL and the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. This change was driven by a desire to provide young athletes with exposure to Hockey Canada and NCAA programs, as noted by SJHL commissioner Kyle McIntyre.
“We wanted to get together and really provide an opportunity for our kids in Manitoba and Saskatchewan to get on the Team Canada West roster and have an opportunity to make that team,” he explained.
Building a diverse team for success
With 40 players participating, Team Canada West staff will select 20 to advance to the main training camp in Calgary, where they will compete for a spot in the upcoming Junior A World Challenge. Flin Flon Bombers head coach Mike Reagan, recently appointed as Team Canada West’s head coach, emphasized the importance of diversity in player skills.
“We talk about building a house and you can’t just have a carpenter. You need plumbers, you need electricians, you need guys doing different jobs,” Reagan stated, underscoring the need for a well-rounded team.
Players making their mark
Among the standout players was Melville Millionaires sophomore Jadon Iyogun, who scored in the finale, expressing his pride in representing Canada.
“It’s amazing to wear the (maple) leaf and score with it on,” Iyogun said, reflecting the significance of the opportunity. Other players, like Portage Terriers goaltender Mitchell Kathler, are now eagerly awaiting the coaching staff’s decisions on who will head to Calgary. “I know what I have to offer,” Kathler shared, highlighting his determination to make an impact.
The upcoming 2024 Junior A World Challenge promises to be an exciting event, with Canada West and Canada East set to face off against teams from the United States and Sweden. Scheduled for December 9 to 15 in Camrose, Alberta, this tournament will be a crucial platform for young athletes to showcase their skills on an international stage.
