Uncovering a family legacy

In a world where cultural artifacts often find themselves far from their origins, one man’s journey to return a jade amulet to Costa Rica highlights the importance of respecting history. Dan McDougall, a resident of Okotoks, Alberta, recently embarked on a mission that began with a family heirloom.

This jade amulet, gifted to his family over 50 years ago, became a catalyst for a deeper understanding of its significance.

McDougall’s connection to the amulet traces back to 1971 when his parents sponsored an exchange student from Costa Rica.

As a token of gratitude, the student’s father gifted the jade piece, which remained a cherished yet overlooked artifact in the family’s collection. After the passing of his mother, McDougall revisited the amulet, prompting him to research its origins and historical context.

From curiosity to action

Through his research, McDougall discovered that the jade amulet likely served a ceremonial purpose in ancient burial practices, potentially dating back 1,500 years. This revelation ignited a sense of responsibility within him. “This thing doesn’t belong here,” he thought, realizing that the amulet was more than just a family keepsake; it was a piece of Costa Rican heritage.

Determined to return the artifact, McDougall reached out to various museums in Costa Rica. His efforts were met with enthusiasm from the National Museum of Costa Rica, which expressed eagerness to examine the amulet. On February 4, McDougall traveled to San Jose, where he was greeted by an archaeologist and a police escort, underscoring the significance of his contribution.

A meaningful exchange

The verification process confirmed the amulet’s authenticity and its historical importance, with estimates placing its age between 1,300 and 2,500 years. McDougall’s actions were praised by experts, including University of British Columbia professor emeritus Michael Blake, who emphasized the importance of respecting the cultural origins of such artifacts.

As the National Museum of Costa Rica prepares to showcase the jade amulet in a new exhibit, McDougall reflects on the journey. He and his wife are contemplating a return to Costa Rica for the exhibit’s opening, marking a full-circle moment in their connection to the artifact. This story serves as a reminder of the importance of cultural heritage and the role individuals can play in preserving history.
