The tragic story of Cpl. Aurèle Bourgeois and Const. Michael O’Leary

Fifty years ago, a tragedy struck the Moncton Police Force when two officers, Cpl. Aurèle Bourgeois and Const. Michael O’Leary, were murdered while investigating a kidnapping case.

This heartbreaking event left a profound impact on their families and the community. The pain of loss is something that resonates deeply, especially for those who were left behind. Charlie Bourgeois, the son of Cpl. Bourgeois, was only 13 at the time.

He recalls the anguish his family endured during those uncertain days when his father went missing. “It was obviously a very difficult time for myself, our family, especially not knowing for several days what had happened,” he shared. This tragic chapter in Moncton’s history serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily.

A community united in remembrance

On December 15, 1974, the bodies of the two officers were discovered in shallow graves, a grim end to a search that had left the community in shock. Lionel Hébert, a former constable who was part of the team that unearthed the bodies, recalls the haunting experience.

“I’ve never had a Christmas where this didn’t weigh on my mind all the time,” he said. The emotional toll of such a discovery is immense, especially for those who worked alongside the fallen officers. The community’s response to this tragedy was one of solidarity and support, as citizens rallied around the Bourgeois family, providing both emotional and financial assistance during their time of need.

Honoring the legacy of bravery

As time has passed, the memory of Cpl. Bourgeois and Const. O’Leary has not faded. A special ceremony held in Moncton recently highlighted the community’s ongoing commitment to honoring these fallen heroes. “The citizens of Moncton rallied around to support our family,” Charlie Bourgeois expressed, emphasizing the importance of keeping his father’s memory alive.

He fondly remembers his father as a dedicated family man who supported his hockey career, building outdoor rinks and attending every game. “He was my hero,” he said, reflecting on the personal loss that continues to shape his life.

The legacy of Cpl. Bourgeois and Const. O’Leary serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those in law enforcement. Their bravery and dedication to serving the community are qualities that will always be remembered. As the community gathers to honor their memory, it is essential to recognize the ultimate price they paid and the impact of their loss on the lives of their families and colleagues.
