Transforming community safety in Regina

The Regina Police Service (RPS) is stepping up its game with a fresh initiative designed to modernize community watch efforts across the city. Dubbed ‘Community On’, this program builds on existing frameworks within the police force, aiming to empower residents to play an active role in crime prevention.

Regina Police Chief Farooq Sheikh emphasizes the importance of collaboration, stating, “Policing, we all know, is challenging. But doing it alone is even harder.” This initiative seeks to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community, fostering a partnership that prioritizes public safety.

Neighborhood watch link: A new way to connect

One of the standout features of the Community On initiative is the introduction of a ‘neighborhood watch link’, currently being piloted in Ward 4. This innovative tool is designed to facilitate the sharing of information among police, residents, and local businesses.

By promoting open communication, the RPS hopes to create a more informed and engaged community. Once the pilot concludes, plans are in place to roll out this program citywide, ensuring that all residents have the opportunity to participate in enhancing their neighborhood’s safety.

Safe neighborhood camera program: Enhancing security

In addition to the neighborhood watch link, the Regina Police Service is launching a ‘safe neighborhood camera’ program. This initiative allows residents to voluntarily share footage from their outward-facing security cameras with the police, aiding in investigations when crimes occur.

Chief Sheikh highlights that the primary goal is not merely to catch criminals but to reduce crime overall. Residents can register their cameras online, and in the event of a crime, police can reach out for relevant footage. Importantly, RPS assures that they will not have access to live feeds, and participation can be withdrawn at any time.

Community support and collaboration

Local leaders, such as Yashu Bither, president of the Arcola East Community Association, have voiced strong support for these initiatives. Bither believes that citizen involvement is crucial in creating a safer environment. The presence of registered cameras can deter potential offenders, as they are aware of the likelihood of being recorded. This program not only fosters collaboration between citizens and law enforcement but also cultivates a sense of community vigilance. To further promote these efforts, the RPS plans to distribute stickers and signs to raise awareness about the community watch programs, reinforcing the message that safety is a collective responsibility.
