Record number of people on one flight test positive for Covid
A record number of 47 passengers on a single flight test positive for the coronavirus.
Flight 6395 from Delhi to Hong Kong landed on April 4 and, within two weeks, nearly 50 of its passengers tested positive for the virus.
The record-breaking news comes after India has seen a sharp rise in cases since the beginning of the month, as the country grapples with a new infectious burden of the virus.
Speaking to Mumbai-based independent Dr. Sharad Akarekar, said, “What we are dealing with here is a catastrophe.
I have to deal with 75 beds in an ICU on a daily basis and the inflow of patients is much more than the outflow.”
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said, “After studying the data, and out of an abundance of caution, we have made the difficult but vital decision to add India to the red list between our two countries we have ties of friendship and family.”
Hancock said most of the 103 cases of the new variant – officially known as B.1.617 – confirmed in the UK had been associated with international travel.
Christina Pagel, Professor of Operational Research at UCL and a member of the Independent Salbeis, said, “We are unlikely to get definitive evidence on B.1.617 for some weeks”
As of April 23, nearly everyone who has traveled from India within the last 10 days is denied entry.
