In a shocking incident that highlights the dangers law enforcement faces, two men from the New York metropolitan area were arrested after their pit bulls attacked police officers during a raid on a suspected drug den in Webster, Massachusetts. The dogs, named “Salami Mami” and “Chocolate Chip,” mauled several officers, resulting in three being hospitalized.

The raid and the attack

On March 5, police executed a search warrant at Mr. Exotix’s snack shop, believed to be a hub for illegal drug sales. The operation was part of a broader investigation involving the FBI. As officers entered the establishment, they were met with unexpected resistance from the suspects inside.

In the chaos, the two pit bulls launched a vicious attack on the officers, leading to a harrowing scene captured on body cameras.

According to Webster Police Chief Michael Shaw, the incident escalated quickly. “What angers me more about this is the fact that this was a commercial establishment that was openly distributing narcotics,” he stated.

The chief praised the officers for their restraint during the attack, which occurred around 1 p.m. on that fateful day.

Injuries and charges

The aftermath of the attack was severe. Three officers were sent to the emergency room, with one requiring 11 stitches to close a wound inflicted by one of the dogs.

The police had to resort to using a Taser and pepper spray to subdue the aggressive animals. Following the incident, Gabriel Blandino, 30, from the Bronx, and Jeffrey Salley, 35, from Yonkers, were charged with multiple offenses, including possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and obstruction of justice.

As the investigation continues, the pit bulls are currently under a 10-day quarantine to assess their health status, including rabies vaccinations. The situation raises significant concerns about the safety of both officers and the community at large.

Community response and implications

This incident has sparked discussions about public safety and the challenges law enforcement faces in dealing with violent situations. Chief Shaw emphasized the importance of transparency, stating, “One of the great things about body cameras is that we can show the public and the community, this is what police are dealing with.” He expressed a commitment to improving the community, stating, “This is just not the kind of community that we want here in Webster. We’re trying to make it a better place.”

The attack underscores the risks associated with drug-related operations and the unpredictable nature of encounters with suspects. As communities grapple with issues of crime and safety, incidents like this serve as a stark reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face daily.
