A judge can now sentence a repeat rapist to be chemical castrated, Pakistan’s parliament has passed its anti-rape legislation, which will allow repeat offenders to be chemically castrated.
Pakistan passes bill to allow chemical castrated of repeat rapists
The country has been working for months to make this concept law, after several lurid cases reverberated across the country and angered citizens who wanted more to be done.
The new law requires Pakistan to set up special nationwide courts specifically to expedite rape trials.
These courts will ensure that sexual abuse cases are resolved “expeditiously, preferably within four months.”
“Chemical castration is a process duly notified by rules made by the prime minister, whereby a person is rendered incapable of sexual intercourse for any period of his life, as determined by the court, by the administration of drugs to be carried out through a notified medical board,” the bill states.
A judge can now sentence a repeat rapist to be chemically castrated, which involves the administration of drugs that help reduce or eliminate a person’s sexual arousal.
Anyone convicted of gang rape will be sentenced to death or life behind bars.
Hopefully, this will change the country’s shocking statistics regarding the sentencing of rape defendants. According to the non-profit War Against Rape, less than 3% of sexual assault or rape trials end in conviction in Pakistan.
While some might welcome the idea of chemically castrating rapists, Amnesty International believes it is an inhumane approach to addressing a serious problem.
