Winter weather warnings in effect
As Ontarians dig themselves out from the recent snowstorm, they are met with the unsettling news of yet another winter weather event on the horizon. Global News chief meteorologist Anthony Farnell has alerted residents that the forecast is likely to change, but the likelihood of a prolonged snow event is increasing.
Early Saturday morning, snow is expected to blanket parts of Ontario, with the Greater Toronto Area anticipating accumulations of 10 to 15 cm by the end of the day.
Sunday’s storm could bring significant snowfall
While Saturday may present challenges, Sunday is shaping up to be even more problematic.
A stronger storm system developing across the southern United States is projected to sweep into southern Ontario, bringing with it heavier snowfall and gusty winds. Computer models indicate that areas could see up to 25 cm of snow, making travel conditions hazardous due to blowing snow.
Eastern Ontario may bear the brunt of this storm, with forecasts suggesting that some regions could receive as much as 50 cm of snow by Monday morning.
Impact on daily life and safety concerns
The recent snowfall has already wreaked havoc on daily life in Ontario.
Schools and community centers have closed their doors, and many cities have implemented parking bans to facilitate snow removal. Toronto Pearson Airport recorded a staggering 26 cm of snow, marking the heaviest snowfall of the season thus far. This has led to a surge in weather-related accidents, with Toronto police reporting over 100 collisions since Wednesday evening.
In response to the inclement weather, Canada Post has issued a “red delivery service” alert, suspending mail delivery and collection across the province.
As the weekend approaches, Ontarians are urged to stay informed about the evolving weather conditions and to take necessary precautions.
With the potential for significant snowfall and hazardous travel conditions, it’s crucial for residents to plan ahead and prioritize safety.
