In recent years, the issue of vaping among students has escalated, prompting schools to seek effective solutions. The Okanagan School District has taken a proactive approach by installing vape detectors in school washrooms, aiming to create a safer environment for students.

This initiative, led by Alan Stel, principal of Summerland Secondary School, is a response to growing concerns from parents and students alike.

Understanding the vaping epidemic

Vaping has become a prevalent issue among youth, with the Canadian Tobacco and Nicotine Survey (CTNS) revealing that approximately 14% of youth aged 15 to 19 reported vaping in the past month.

Alarmingly, a significant portion of these young vapers—69%—had never tried a traditional tobacco cigarette. This statistic highlights the need for schools to address vaping not just as a disciplinary issue but as a public health concern.

Innovative technology in action

The vape detectors installed in Okanagan schools resemble traditional smoke detectors, featuring small cages and an alarm system that activates when vaping is detected. These devices are paired with cameras to monitor restroom activity, allowing school officials to identify patterns and address the issue more effectively.

While the cost of these detectors is a consideration, Stel emphasizes that the long-term benefits, including reduced management issues and enhanced student safety, justify the investment.

Community involvement and future plans

The initiative began when concerned parents and students approached the school district, highlighting the need for action.

The district’s willingness to listen and implement solutions reflects a growing trend in educational institutions to prioritize student well-being. As the project progresses, Stel plans to seek approval to expand the installation of vape detectors to additional bathrooms, reinforcing the district’s commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment for all students.

As vaping continues to pose challenges in schools, the Okanagan School District’s innovative approach serves as a model for other educational institutions facing similar issues. By combining technology with community engagement, schools can effectively address the vaping epidemic while fostering a culture of safety and responsibility among students.
