Officer dies while trying to save drowning children
A Worcester police officer drowned Friday afternoon after jumping into a pond to save three drowning children.
Named witnesses Megan Lamonda and Ayeh Tanteh said the incident began around 1:35 p.m. June 4 when they heard three children screaming for help from the pond at Green Hill Park.
One of the witnesses called 911 and told dispatchers that help was needed immediately.
Lamonda and Tanteh stayed at the pond and watched as police arrived on the scene.
“Two kids were in the water trying to hug each other in the water when I got here, screaming that they couldn’t swim and that there was someone else underneath,” a witness commented.
Witnesses who witnessed the entire incident said four officers quickly arrived on the scene and rushed to the pond to rescue the children. A few minutes later, three of the officers emerged from the water with only two of the children.
After 20 to 30 minutes passed, rescuers pulled the fourth police officer out of the pond and covered him with a blanket. Witnesses Lamonda and Tanteh continued.
Sources confirmed that the drowned officer was rushed to the University of Massachusetts Memorial, where he was pronounced dead.
Divers pulled the missing boy from the water around 3:30 pm. A crowd remained by the pond as divers continued to search the water.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the drowned hero.
