A 21-day-old baby was found in a box found in the Ganges, a common river in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, according to local police.

Local boatman Gullu Chaudhary was near the bank of the Dadri Ghat in the city of Ghazipur on Tuesday when he heard a baby crying, police said.

He followed the cries until he came across a box in the water, where he found a baby, who was wrapped in a red cloth.

The box also contained the child’s astrological birth chart, which interpreted her age, some incense sticks and an image of the Hindu degradation Durga.

The police were then alerted and the baby was taken to a local district hospital.

“It is difficult to say how and why the baby is in the box.” Authorities had named the child “Ganga” after the name was found written on a piece of paper. Ganga is the Hindi word for the river Ganges.

Yogi Adityanath, chief minister of the state, praised Chaudhary for saving the child.

“As a token of our gratitude to the boatman, he will receive benefits from all eligible government schemes,” he tweeted in Hindi.

He also added that the state government would take all necessary steps for the newborn’s education.

Child abandonment is a crime punishable under Section 317 of the Indian Penal Code, but it is a long-standing problem in India, especially in the case of girls.
