However, it was destroyed in a fire during the early hours of yesterday morning (Wednesday, April 14).
The pub opened today, as planned, in the existing brewery, but owner Jon Haines said the loss of the Secret Garden was “heartbreaking”.
He has now launched a fundraiser to try to rebuild it,
The fundraising page says: “The White Horse Tea Green is a country pub in Luton that has been built with the support of the community and our customers.”
“Over the last few months we have invested over £25,000 and thousands of hours of work in creating a new safe Covid’s outdoor space to cater for our customers after the closure.
“Our first customers joined us on Monday evening for a sneak peek ahead of the official opening this Thursday.
“In the early hours of this morning [Wednesday, April 14], our new space and children’s play area caught fire and was reduced to ashes.”
“We are very grateful and with this in mind we would like to keep all fundraising to one page and ensure that it is put back in place for all
“Thank you for helping us through this distressing experience.”
“Police are investigating the cause of the fire.”
A spokesman for Hertfordshire Constabulary said, “Police were called shortly after 8.30am on Wednesday, April 14 to a report of a fire in the garden at The White Horse in Tea Green.
“Officers and firefighters attended the scene. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
