Improving accessibility with the new parkade
After years of safety concerns and complaints regarding parking at Regina General Hospital, the long-awaited parkade has officially opened its doors. This new facility is not just a parking solution; it represents a significant investment in accessibility for patients, visitors, and staff alike.
With a total of 1,005 parking stalls, including 873 in the parkade and 132 surface stalls, the new structure is designed to alleviate the parking woes that have plagued the hospital for years.
Key features of the parkade
The four-level parkade boasts 320 public parking spaces on the ground level, while the upper levels are dedicated to secure staff parking, providing 685 spaces.
This expansion increases the overall parking capacity around the hospital by 686 spots, a much-needed improvement for a facility that serves a large community. The parkade also includes modern features such as a stall count display at the entrances, allowing users to easily see the number of available spaces.
Additionally, it offers six pay-by-use electric vehicle (EV) charging stations for staff and four for visitors, promoting eco-friendly transportation options.
Government investment and community impact
The Saskatchewan government has invested $22.4 million into the construction of the RGH Parkade, emphasizing the importance of accessible healthcare services.
SHA Chief Operating Officer Derek Miller highlighted that this facility is more than just a parking area; it is a vital component in ensuring the seamless delivery of high-quality healthcare. The parkade’s opening is a significant milestone for Regina General Hospital, as it not only enhances convenience for patients and visitors but also supports the staff who work tirelessly to provide care.
The consistent parking fees and payment systems will remain unchanged, ensuring that the transition to this new facility is smooth for everyone involved.
