Nearly 6 in 10 say racism is a serious problem in the U.S

Nearly 6 in 10 Americans say racism in the United States is a serious problem, according to a poll by the Associated Press and the Norc Center for Public Affairs conducted Friday.

Fifty-nine percent of respondents said racism was an “extremely” or “very serious problem” in the US.

Of that, 30 percent said racism was an “extremely serious” problem while 29 percent said it was a “very serious problem.

There were large differences between what white and black Americans had perceived racism to be.

For example, 60 percent of black Americans were surveyed and opined that racism is an “extremely serious problem” compared to 23 percent of white Americans.

The poll sought to examine attitudes about race nearly a year after the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis

In April, a jury convicted Chauvin of second- and third-degree murder, as well as second-degree manslaughter for Floyd’s death. Chauvin is scheduled to be sentenced in June.

Chauvin is said to be sentenced in June. His proceeding moves from August to March 2022 on the federal charges against Chauvin.

Most Americans surveyed said the attention given to police reform as a result of Floyd’s case produced little change.
