Emerging talent in the WHL

Morgan Tastad’s journey in the Western Hockey League (WHL) is a testament to hard work and dedication. His debut at the SaskTel Centre during the 2023 WHL playoffs marked a significant milestone in his junior career.

As a young call-up from the Saskatoon U18 AAA Contacts, Tastad quickly made a name for himself. However, his connection with the Saskatoon Blades organization runs deeper, having previously participated in their former ‘Rink of Dreams’ program. This early exposure laid the groundwork for his current success.

Stepping up in a competitive environment

In his second full season in the WHL, Tastad has emerged as a crucial player on Saskatoon’s youthful blueline. Transitioning from a bottom-pair option to a top-four defenseman, he has embraced the increased responsibility following the departure of former alternate captain Tanner Molendyk.

Partnered with overager Grayden Siepmann, Tastad has achieved career highs, recording seven points in 52 games. His adaptability and determination shine through as he navigates the challenges of a competitive roster filled with talented young players.

Community engagement and leadership

Beyond his on-ice contributions, Tastad is committed to making a positive impact in the Saskatoon community. Recently turning 19, he has taken on the role of team ambassador for the non-profit organization ‘Hockey Gives Blood.’ His involvement includes school visits and youth practices, fostering a connection with young fans and aspiring players.

Tastad’s friendship with former teammate Charlie Wright inspired him to step into this ambassador role, showcasing his willingness to give back and support local initiatives.

Aiming for playoff success

With 15 games of playoff experience under his belt, Tastad is focused on helping the Blades secure a spot in the postseason.

As the team approaches the final stretch of the regular season, they are in pursuit of the East Division crown, with only four points separating them from the rival Prince Albert Raiders. Tastad emphasizes the importance of consistency, stating, “We got to show up every night and try to get two points when we can.” His leadership and determination will be crucial as the Blades gear up for their upcoming matches.

Looking ahead

As the Blades prepare for their next game against the Moose Jaw Warriors, Tastad’s journey serves as an inspiration for young athletes in the community. His blend of talent, hard work, and community involvement exemplifies the spirit of the WHL. Fans and aspiring players alike are eager to see how Tastad’s career unfolds, both on the ice and in his role as a community leader.
