A Michigan man faces charges for arson after traveling 700 miles to attack his family.

In a shocking turn of events, a 21-year-old man from Rockford, Michigan, has been arrested for allegedly driving over 700 miles to set fire to a Pennsylvania home. The incident, which occurred in Bensalem, has left a family devastated and raised serious questions about the motives behind such a violent act.

The harrowing night

On the fateful night, six individuals were inside the home when the fire broke out. Thanks to the quick actions of the mother, who heard suspicious noises, the family managed to escape. Tragically, their two dogs, Trey and Jett, were unable to flee and perished in the flames.

Public Safety Director William McVey praised the mother’s bravery, stating, “It’s a miracle they all survived.” Her instinct to investigate the noises likely saved her family’s lives, as some members had to jump from second-story windows to escape the inferno.

Investigating the crime

Authorities quickly launched an investigation, determining that the fire was intentionally set. Surveillance footage from a neighbor captured a black sedan arriving at the home around 5 a.m. The suspect, later identified as Harrison Jones, was seen exiting the vehicle and lingering near the back of the house for over ten minutes before fleeing just moments before the explosion.

Investigators traced the vehicle back to Jones, who was found to have burns on his arm, suggesting his involvement in the crime.

A twisted motive

Jones is reported to be the ex-boyfriend of a woman who had been in an online relationship with a male resident of the Bensalem home.

Court documents reveal that he was supposed to drive his ex-girlfriend to meet this man but instead took matters into his own hands, driving over 730 miles with “murderous intentions.” He now faces multiple charges, including attempted homicide and arson, as he awaits extradition back to Pennsylvania.

The aftermath and community response

The Zalenski family, who lost everything in the fire, has received an outpouring of support from the community. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help them rebuild their lives after this horrific event. The family’s ordeal is compounded by the fact that they have already faced significant challenges, including a long battle with cancer. A family member expressed the deep emotional toll this tragedy has taken, stating, “This is a family’s worst nightmare.”

Honoring the lost pets

In a touching tribute, a fundraiser has also been initiated with the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society to honor the memory of Trey and Jett. Plans are underway to create a plaque dedicated to the dogs, recognizing their heroism in the face of danger. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community support in times of crisis.
