Mia, the little girl born in a Kiev subway bunker in the middle of the war in Ukraine
The invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops led by Vladimir Putin cannot put an end to everyday life, to life and to images that take us back to other times, to the bombings of World War II or to the hell experienced in the former Yugoslavia.
The births between bombs.
This is the case of Mia, a baby girl who was born Friday night in a makeshift bunker in the Kiev subway, while the first Russian shelling began to take place above ground.
Democracy in Action Conference president Hannah Hopko shared the story on her Facebook account. “Mia was born in a shelter tonight in a stressful environment – shelling from Kiev,” she said. “Her mom is happy after this challenging delivery. When Putin kills Ukrainians, we call on mothers in Russia and Belarus to protest against Russia’s war in Ukraine.
We stand up for life and humanity,” she added.
The 23-year-old girl’s mother was delivered by a female Ukrainian police officer, Mykola Shlapak. After the birth, an ambulance was called, and the mother and daughter were taken to a hospital, both in good condition.
Mia’s story has gone viral and has soon been seen as another element to give hope to the Ukrainian population, who see in her birth a symbol, a miracle in the face of the horror of war.
