Man sparks fury after asking mother at coffee shop to ‘breastfeed elsewhere’
The Reddit user, 27, explained that he was having lunch at a cafe when the woman, in her 20s, walked in with her baby.
She said the place was so busy that there were only two seats available, one of which was under an air conditioning unit, the other was in front of her small table.
After a while, the baby started crying, so the mother “[pulled] out a breast and [began] breastfeeding,” she wrote.
“Obviously I’m just avoiding all eye contact, but he got so uncomfortable that I ended up asking him if I could see if he could sit at the other table,” she continued.
“I’m just trying to sit here, drink this cup of coffee, finish reading my portfolio and leave.”
He continued, “The woman looked apologetic and actually said she couldn’t and that the baby was already eating (feeding? [I don’t know]), so I took the coffee and started to leave.
“Some people looked at me like I was an idiot and it’s been bothering me. I know it’s a natural thing for babies and moms and there’s nothing I can do. I wasn’t going to try to force her to leave, so I left.”
However, she emphasized, “I just didn’t know what to say when a random woman is breastfeeding three feet away.”
At the end of his post , he asked if he had gone “too far” in asking the woman to switch tables, admitting that he felt like a bit of an “idiot.”
Redditors’ fellow Redditors agreed with the latter assessment, with the post racking up hundreds of comments and more than 1,400 upvotes in a matter of hours.
They added: “Please do better next time, she deserves empathy, which was definitely not what you gave her.”
Another seconded their condemnation, saying, “Seriously, women get reprimanded in public no matter how they choose to feed their child, LET IT BE.
She wasn’t shoving her boob in your face.”
