Normally, the swimming spot at West Branch Cayuga Inlet in Newfield is calm, stable and relatively safe.

Unfortunately, on this particular Monday, the water became extremely volatile as a result of heavy rains.

While most of his family was at the water’s edge, Michael began recording his girlfriend with his phone moments before she suddenly fell into the water, said his brother, David Mayer, according to the media outlet.

Michael immediately dropped the phone and jumped in to save her.

Tompkins County Sheriff Jennifer Olin confirmed Friday, July 16, that the family was on the shore when Carissa fell into the water and the strong current pulled her under its surface.

Michael had tried to rescue her, added Thomas T.

Basher Jr, deputy chief of the Ithaca Fire Department. The children, who witnessed the couple jump into the water, alerted a stranger who called emergency services at about 6:45 p.m. The couple tragically drowned.

Tragically, the couple drowned and their bodies were recovered after three hours.

While Michael worked as a contractor, Carissa worked at Clark’s Food Mart in Dryden. A close friend described her as a “fun” and “upbeat” person.
